Doing more than making headlines ...

My name is Madison Fernandez and I am a journalist from Brooklyn, New York. I am a recent graduate of Ithaca College, where I studied journalism and health policy and management. On campus, I was the editor in chief of The Ithacan, our award winning, student-run paper. I was the recipient of the 2020 Society of Professional Journalists Regional Mark of Excellence award for my coverage of the impact of Ithaca College’s budget on students.

As a member of the Emma Bowen Foundation, an organization for students of color pursuing jobs in the media industry, I have built a strong network in the professional journalism community. At IC, I was involved in the Park Scholar Program, a full-ride merit scholarship issued to students with a passion for media and social justice. I am a frequent attendee of the College Media Association conferences. Some of my most impactful journalism experiences have been workshops and conferences, including when I reported a longform piece on cybersecurity at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in 2019 and when I participated in the Politico Journalism Institute in 2020.

Previously, I've worked as an editorial intern at Forbes Media on the College Rankings Team, a position I have continued in Summer 2021. I have also interned at 1010 WINS in New York City, CBS News in London and WRFI Community Radio and the Ithaca Voice in Ithaca, New York. While I am focused on print and digital journalism, I also have experience with broadcast and audio and am always eager to delve into more multimedia endeavors.
